CD Projekt Red just gave one of the most beloved RPGs ever made a genuine reason to replay it. During Gamescom's Opening Night Live, the studio announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, launching September 29, 2026 — and for anyone who already owns the game, it's completely free.
What's Actually Changing
This isn't a simple resolution bump. CD Projekt Red is billing Remastered as a genuine overhaul across visuals, performance, and gameplay, with confirmed changes including:
Enhanced combat, with new finisher animations and reworked effects for Witcher Signs
Improved traversal and movement, including modified mantling and climbing mechanics
Enhanced monster behaviors
A revamped skill tree
Transmogrification support, letting players keep a favorite armor's appearance while upgrading its stats
An expanded Photo Mode
Revamped mount handling for Roach
Cross-platform mod support, reworked quest tracking, an overhauled looting system, and HDR improvements
Two Brand-New Platforms
Here's the genuinely surprising part: Remastered isn't just landing on the platforms The Witcher 3 already exists on. CD Projekt Red confirmed the game is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 as a native release, and — in a partnership nobody was expecting — to Battle.net, marking a new collaboration between CD Projekt Red and Blizzard Entertainment.
Existing Witcher 3 owners on Nintendo Switch will also be able to claim Remastered on Switch 2 once it releases, rather than needing to buy the game again from scratch.
Free Expansions, Starting Today
CD Projekt Red also had a surprise for anyone who's never gotten around to the game's DLC: as of today, all current owners of The Witcher 3 get both expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — for free, ahead of Remastered's launch next month. Both expansions will also be bundled directly into the Remastered base game going forward.
If you've owned The Witcher 3 for years but never played its expansions, there's no better time to fix that than right now, while you wait for Remastered to arrive.
Where to Get It
Remastered will be available as a free upgrade for existing owners on:
PC — Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG
PlayStation 5 (with PS5 Pro support confirmed)
Xbox Series X|S
And as new purchases on:
Nintendo Switch 2 (native version)
Battle.net (new platform, via the Blizzard partnership)
If you don't own The Witcher 3 yet, it's available to buy right now on any of these platforms ahead of the free Remastered upgrade landing in September. And if you're on Switch 2 or Battle.net — the two platforms where Remastered is a new purchase rather than a free upgrade — pre-purchases are already live today.
There's More Witcher Coming After This
Remastered isn't traveling alone. CD Projekt Red also gave a first look at Songs of the Past, a new expansion bringing Geralt back to the Path alongside an old friend for what's being billed as a grand adventure in an idyllic new region called Letten. The official teaser promises "a wealth of new quests, characters, and secrets to uncover" — but true to Witcher form, something sinister is said to be lurking just beneath Letten's peaceful surface.
Songs of the Past is confirmed for GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, targeting a 2027 release. It's available to wishlist right now ahead of that window.
And for players who want to jump on Remastered itself immediately: pre-purchases are live today, ahead of the September 29 launch.
For players looking further down the road, CD Projekt Red confirmed The Witcher IV, starring Ciri, is targeting a 2028 release.
Oh, and about that Battle.net partnership — CD Projekt Red confirmed in a separate post that it's teaming up with Blizzard specifically to bring The Witcher's dark fantasy world to the platform for the first time. Players who purchase Songs of the Past through Battle.net will unlock a Geralt-inspired skin in Diablo IV, with more details expected when CD Projekt Red appears at BlizzCon this September.
The Bottom Line
Eleven years after its original release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting the kind of send-off most games never receive: a free, substantial remaster, two new platforms it's never touched before, and a fresh expansion already on the horizon. For anyone who's been meaning to finally play — or replay — one of the best RPGs ever made, September 29 is shaping up to be the moment to do it.
